This morning my daily devotional reading dealt with fear! Fear is something that I think every human being has had to deal with one time or another in their life. The scripture for this devotional was from Isaiah 43 with emphasis on the first verse. Isaiah 43:1-2 states, “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name, you are mine. I will be with you when you pass through the waters and when you pass through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you. You will not be scorched when you walk through the fire and the flame will not burn you.”
As I read that scripture, I thought God knows my name he has redeemed me and what do I have to fear? Today we have an unstable economy, loss of jobs, the middle class has all but disappeared, and children are out of control with too many killings. I could go on but you get the idea. With all that is going on God tells us not to fear! What a statement!!!
This is the definition for FEAR: False evidence appearing real. We fear things that might happen (not that they have) but it might. Our minds create thoughts that are troubling and that really doesn’t exist but in our minds. By doing this we become stressful, blood pressure rises and all other kinds of medical problems happen because of fear. Job even stated that what he feared the most has come upon him. Job 3:25 states, “for the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.” Look carefully at this scripture. Nothing had happen to Job, he just feared that something would and that fear brought on the issues in his life.
I must confess that I too have fears like financial concerns, family, friends, retirement and hearing from and trusting in God. But this is the truth; these fears are based on false evidence appearing real! My devotion this morning brought this home. God, my father who feeds the birds, gave me life has promised me that He would supply all my needs through Christ Jesus (Phil. 4:19). So what am I worried about?
The question then becomes who am I going to believe? Am I going to believe the newspaper, TV, the government? They only tell us what they want us to know and most of it has very little truth. Self serving information is what I am calling it. Then we have the main source of everything God Almighty.
Trusting God is a learned behavior, but he has given all of us a measure of faith to believe and trust him. He has promised that if: (1) I (we) acknowledge him in all our ways and lean not to my own understanding that he would direct our my path, (2) be anxious for nothing, but in prayer and supplication make our request known and to allow the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard our hearts and minds, (3) fear not because he knows me (you) and what I (we) need and who’s word has never failed. We have not because we ask not. So what do I have to fear, the Lord Almighty knows me and is concerned about me. What about you? Are you ready to let your fears go? I am. He knows you and wants you free from worry and all fears. Come on we can Trust him He never fails!
